About
Biography
Nancy Ferraro is the author of the memoir *When the Bell Breaks*, in which she recounts her profound and challenging journey of adopting a four-year-old boy from Romania. Though initially assured that her son, George, was “typical”, Nancy was confronted with the reality of his severe disabilities, including foetal alcohol syndrome, attachment disorder, and autism brought on by life in an institution. Nicknamed “Hurricane George” for the turmoil he brought into their lives, raising him proved to be a relentless test of endurance and love. Driven by the isolation and stigma she faced—both from society and herself—Nancy wrote her memoir to offer hope and understanding to other parents silently struggling. Through her story, she strives to shed light on the difficulties of parenting traumatised children and to foster a sense of community for families navigating similar challenges.
